Guide to Choosing the Right Pram

At Little Peas, we strive to simplify the process of selecting a pram for your child. We’ve been in this business for 16 years and our experts are here to help every step of the way.

When many expectant parents come into Little Peas for the first time, they’ll often say something to the effect of; “We’re first-time parents, and we have no idea where to start”.  We’ll often show them the basics of prams, just in general. Ultimately, while there are many different brands, shapes, sizes and styles; in short, they all do the same thing – get baby from A to B.

Here’s some useful information that will help when choosing your pram

1

What is a travel system?

Most people will want to opt for a travel system (sometimes referred to as a 3-in-1 system); this would typically comprise of:

  • Carrycot (bassinet / pram body)
  • Stroller with chassis (sometimes called buggy / pushchair) – in most cases the pushchair seat can sit on the chassis and face the parent, and removed and turned around to face outward also
  • Car seat (infant carrier)
2

How long will a pram last?

When you’re using the system in a typical style, you’ll start off by using the chassis (from the stroller) in conjunction with the carrycot. In this combination, it’s what most people would look at, and refer to as a pram. You’ll use this from birth, and on average, to around 6 months. From 6 months onward, you’ll likely use the pushchair seat unit on the chassis, normally (where applicable) with the seat unit in a parent-facing position. As the child grows and becomes more curious, it’s quite typical that you’ll turn the seat unit around to face outward. The stroller/pushchair part is generally going to have the capacity and ability to be used until the point when you no longer need to push the child. However, you may (at some point) opt to downsize to a more compact buggy, depending on your needs.

What About a Car Seat?

When traveling in a car, your baby must be kept in a car seat. For a newborn, they’d typically be traveling in an infant carrier, which would fit in the car in a rearward-facing direction. The infant carrier will be used from birth and will last until the baby is around 1-1.5 years. With the use of car seat adaptors, you can usually fit the infant carrier onto the chassis of the stroller, to add convenience for shorter periods of use/travel.
